; The article offers a discussion of queer visibility politics and representations in solidarity with queer life in the post-Soviet context. Following a theoretical problematization of Northwestern queer, feminist, and anti-racist visibility policies, it shows what alternative forms of representation queer solidarity might have on the example of Masha Godovannaya's film "Countryless and Queer" (2020). Godovannaya's film is concerned with problems of queer representation in conversations with migrants from diverse contexts in Vienna. It offers filmic and narrative forms of representation that can be framed as strategy of opacity or un_visibility. Such representations refuse victimization and offer instead a possibility for queer solidarity with marginalized people. Furthermore, Godovannaya's film allows for a kind of queer-feminist solidarity as a practice of community-building.

This essay proposes a sketch of an Idea for how to investigate connections between Film Studies, film as a medium, labor, and migration. It begins by making three interconnected provocations: (1) histories of Film Studies, and of film as a medium, should display constant engagement with labor, work, labor movements, class, and justice; (2) in our current world of globalized capital and culture, film embodies the unending processes of adjustment intrinsic to labor, class, and migration; (3) nowadays, images cross borders and boundaries easily, and thus call for a sustained critical look at how the medium of film represents matters of labor, class, and migration. Building on these provocations, the essay argues that labor, class, and migration might be, collectively, what Alain Badiou calls "a new sun" and "a new mental country" that Film Studies must desperately find lest, perhaps, Film Studies perishes. In so doing, the essay explores three interrelated questions: firstly, ways in which belief (in specific processes) can be described, prior to being applicable to anything; secondly, in a search for the real, in a quest for what is real, how an Idea of science is mobilized; and finally, ways in which "Labor"/"Migrant Labor" and "Film" can be perceived today.
This essay studies cultural representations of Puerto Rico's economic boom and 1952 shift in legal status to the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. It suggests that apprehending these events requires the reframing of Puerto Rican migration as global phenomena. Drawing on the historical and cultural scholarship on Puerto Rican migration, Operation Bootstrap, and US empire, Tolentino analyzes the famous musical film West Side Story (1961), but also the Hollywood film Sabrina (1954) and Island productions El Otro Camino (The Other Road, 1955) and Maruja (1958). In contrast to prevailing views, she interprets these films as narratives about migration and modernization that engage the discourse of sentimental modernization, the figure of the jíbaro, and the idea of small town Puerto Rico. In so doing, they reveal the global vision at the center of the Operation Bootstrap development plan and Commonwealth formation. The concluding section suggests how the films take up issues in Puerto Rico's historiography. Rather than merely illuminating a forgotten historical period of 1950s Puerto Rico, the 1950s films negotiate Puerto Rico's geographical, political, and cultural locations by rethinking institutionalized meanings of 1898 in discourses of Puerto Rico historiography and US empire. Proposing new ways of interpreting the introduction of the Commonwealth in 1952 makes possible the revision of dominant conceptions of 1898 rooted in nation, government, and constitutional law.

This article examines a number of recent European films that tackle the issue of migration from former communist countries to Western Europe. The key films discussed in the article all seek to show how the West is constructed as an object of desire for the inhabitants of the former communist bloc and how the protagonists' fantasies of the West are sustained by ideology even in the face of the harsh realities of contemporary capitalism. Slavoj Žižek's Lacanian model of ideology is applied to the film texts in order to highlight these issues, particularly his notion of "traversing fantasy." The article concludes by examining the position of the audience in relation to this process.
